Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, said the act was immediately stopped, the culprits arrested, and their tools including a chainsaw used in the operation were confiscated.

He explained that the trees have provided shelter and environmental benefits to residents for many years, stressing that their destruction poses a threat to the community’s ecosystem.

The suspects have since been handed over to security agencies for further investigation and prosecution.

Dr. Hashim warned that cutting down trees without official approval is a punishable offence that could attract jail time, even when carried out within private property.

He further cautioned residents against the illegal use of chainsaws or other tree-felling equipment, adding that the state government has banned such practices and will enforce strict compliance.
