The abduction was said to have taken place on Wednesday evening on the road between Kamuya village and the Buni Yadi axis, as the officials were travelling from Biu toward Maiduguri following last Saturday’s local government elections. One of the councillors taken was identified as the immediate past vice-chairman of the council, Vanguard reports.
Also seized during the incident were several other passengers who were travelling in a Hisbah vehicle from Potiskum in Yobe State to Biu. The exact number of passengers abducted has not been confirmed.
A senior politician from the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, called on the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of the abducted officials and other victims.
The Biu-Buratai-Kamuya-Buni-Damaturu road, which stretches for about 120 kilometres, has remained notorious for insecurity. Over the years, the route has recorded repeated cases of killings and abductions, making it one of the most dangerous corridors in the region.
