The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Mohammad Abubakar II, has called on Nigerians to refrain from criticizing their leaders, urging them instead to place their trust in God to hold leaders accountable as He deems fit.

Speaking at a Regional Conference on Climate Change-Induced Conflicts in Northern Nigeria, organized by the Kaduna State Bureau of Interfaith and International Alert, the Sultan emphasized the importance of prayer for the nation and its leaders.

He reminded those in leadership that they will be answerable to God alone on the Day of Resurrection. “On that day, every leader will stand alone. Governors, advisers—none will have support except their own deeds,” he said, stressing the need for leaders to act with responsibility and fear of God.

Highlighting the influence of religious leaders, the Sultan advised them against misleading their followers for personal gain. “Only God can save any human being,” he stated, warning against placing too much trust in any individual. He urged Nigerians to turn to worship and prayer, particularly during challenging times. “Focus on worshiping Allah (God) and leave the rest to Him. Don’t follow those who might lead you astray. Our country faces many challenges, and we must turn to God in prayer,” he said.

The Sultan expressed his optimism despite the hardships many are facing, stating, “Even though many feel times are particularly hard, we believe relief will come. Let’s increase our prayers for our leaders, trusting God to address them in His way.” In attendance was the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), reflecting a unified stance on the importance of interfaith prayer for the nation.

Addressing the issues facing northern Nigeria, including climate change, poverty, and insecurity, the Sultan highlighted the region’s history of resilience and unity. “When we are united, we can face any challenge and build a prosperous community,” he said, cautioning against divisive narratives and calling for strength in unity.
