Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has condemned the brutal killing of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rano Police Division in Kano State by a mob, describing it as a despicable crime that must not go unpunished.

Daily News 24 reports that Shehu Sani made this remark on his official X account on Wednesday, after watching a video showing the mob’s violent attack on the senior police officer.

He described the killing as barbaric, noting that the DPO was tortured and butchered to death while discharging his duty. According to him, the officer was reportedly survived by a wife and four children.

Sani urged authorities to ensure that everyone involved in the crime is brought to justice, particularly those captured in the viral footage. He also offered prayers for the repose of the officer’s soul.

The DPO was killed on May 26 during a violent protest in Rano following the death of a young man, Abdullahi Musa, who was arrested for reckless riding and allegedly being under the influence of substances.

The Kano State Police Command, however, clarified that the deceased did not die in custody, but at Rano General Hospital, where he was taken after showing signs of illness while in detention.

The incident triggered outrage among residents, leading to the attack on the Rano Divisional Police Headquarters, where parts of the facility and several vehicles were set ablaze.

Police authorities have since confirmed the arrest of 27 suspects linked to the violence and assured that a thorough investigation is ongoing.
