The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has endorsed the decision of northern governors to close schools during Ramadan.

Speaking in Kaduna on Thursday, SCSN Secretary-General Nafiu Baba-Ahmad said the move prioritizes students’ well-being amid extreme heat conditions. He criticized groups, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), for opposing the decision, stating that legal and industrial threats were unnecessary.

Baba-Ahmad assured that the closure would not disrupt academics, as lost time could be recovered by adjusting the long vacation. He added that the decision, made in consultation with the Ministries of Education, had received broad acceptance from parents.

Citing the 1964 Education Law, he reaffirmed that governors have exclusive rights to set school holidays, except in Kogi State. He urged stakeholders to respect state authorities and refrain from interfering in educational policies affecting students.
