Senate President Godswill Akpabio has warned that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions could negatively impact the political prospects of women in Nigeria.

Speaking during Tuesday’s plenary session, Akpabio expressed concern that the controversy surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations against him might discourage politicians from appointing women to key positions.

He criticized her for bypassing the Senate by taking her petition directly to court and later escalating the matter to the international community, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in New York.

Despite his criticisms, Akpabio urged politicians not to let one individual’s actions hinder opportunities for other women, including his four daughters.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele defended the Senate’s decision, dismissing claims that Akpabio presided over his own case. He maintained that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension followed due legislative procedures.

The Senate imposed a six-month suspension on Akpoti-Uduaghan, barring her from all legislative activities, locking her office, suspending her salaries and allowances, and withdrawing her security detail. However, her legislative aides will continue to receive their salaries.

Following her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan took the matter to the IPU, arguing that the decision was unjust.
