The decision followed the adoption of a motion titled “Motion to Stop Further Misuse of FIFA and CAF Grants by the Nigerian Football Federation,” which was raised as a matter of urgent public importance during Tuesday’s plenary. The motion was jointly sponsored by Hon. Adedayo Adesola from Lagos State and Hon. Felix Nwaeke from Rivers State.
The sponsors expressed concern that the NFF had received over $25 million in development funds between 2015 and 2025 without showing any tangible improvement or accountability in its financial management.
Adesola argued that the alleged poor handling of these grants has contributed to the declining performance of Nigeria’s national football teams in recent years. He cited, for instance, the reported use of $1.2 million for the renovation of Birnin Kebbi Stadium, which he described as substandard when compared to similar projects in Kenya that achieved better results with less funding.
Lawmakers warned that unless the situation is addressed, such financial mismanagement could continue and negatively affect Nigeria’s preparations for upcoming international competitions.
The House unanimously adopted the motion, directing the newly formed Special Committee to investigate the NFF’s financial records from 2015 to date. The committee is also mandated to summon NFF officials to provide detailed explanations on how the FIFA and CAF grants were utilized.
