The House of Representatives has dismissed allegations that its members received $5,000 each to approve President Bola Tinubu’s State of Emergency declaration in Rivers State.

Hon. Philip Agbese, Deputy Spokesman of the House, refuted the claims while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Saturday. He described the allegations as false, malicious, and originating from “the pit of hell.” According to him, the decision to approve the emergency declaration was driven by patriotism and the need to restore peace in the state.

Agbese explained that the House reached its resolution after thorough deliberations on the security and political situation in Rivers State. He stressed that the lawmakers acted in line with their constitutional duty to maintain national stability.

He further asserted that the House remains an independent institution committed to democratic principles, the rule of law, and the will of Nigerians. Dismissing the bribery allegations as an attempt to tarnish the image of the legislature, he urged the public to disregard such claims.

Meanwhile, the House made key modifications to the President’s emergency proclamation, including assuming legislative duties in Rivers State during the emergency period. Lawmakers also agreed to review the duration of the state of emergency if the concerned parties resolve their differences earlier than expected.
