The Kano State Police Command says a distressed man who voluntarily surrendered himself to the authorities after battling depression and poverty has received counseling and support to rebuild his life.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, on behalf of Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, the command said the man initially introduced himself as a thug but later confessed that he was not involved in criminal activities. According to the police, he admitted that hardship and frustration had driven him to contemplate joining crime before he decided to seek help.

Bakori urged the man to embrace positive conduct and warned against the dangers of resorting to crime. He stressed that turning to lawful and productive means of survival would not only benefit him but also safeguard society. He further appealed to members of the public not to stigmatize those who seek repentance but rather encourage them towards reintegration.

The Commissioner commended the man for his courage, describing his decision to seek guidance as an important step toward rehabilitation. He encouraged others facing similar challenges to speak up and reach out to authorities, family members, or support groups instead of resorting to unlawful acts.

In an act of support, the Kano chapter of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), led by Dr. Goni Faruk Umar, assisted the man with N150,000 cash, a bag of rice, and an additional N250,000 interest-free loan to help him revive his carpentry business. Bakori praised the ACF’s intervention, describing it as a show of compassion and commitment to peace and social development in the state.

The Police Command also appreciated other well-meaning individuals who expressed willingness to support the man and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring public safety while promoting initiatives that help reintegrate vulnerable individuals into society.

The statement called on community leaders, religious groups, NGOs, and citizens to continue supporting peace-building and welfare efforts that discourage crime and promote stability in Kano State.
