The Kano State Police Command has launched a school protection squad comprising 60 personnel who are expected to provide security to vulnerable primary, secondary and tertiary schools in the the state.

Daily News 24 reports that the 60-man squad was unveiled on Thursday by the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel.

CP Gumel revealed that the squad, to be known as the Special Schools Protection Police Squad, aligns with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) strategy to ensure protection for schools, approached from a community policing perspective.

The police chief said the initiative is part of his legacy in the state in under one year, adding that the school protection squad “aims to create a conducive learning environment and provide maximum security for children.”

According to him, the command has arrested and prosecuted over 3,000 criminals for various offences, including kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, human trafficking, illicit drug dealings, and thuggery in the year under review.
