According to a letter dated April 4, 2025, and signed by CP Olajide Rufus Ibitoye on behalf of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), the Emir is expected to appear at the FID headquarters in Abuja by 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, for an investigative meeting.
The letter, addressed to the Emir’s Palace in Kano, stated that the invitation was issued on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police to investigate “an incident that occurred during the Sallah celebration within your domain.” The police emphasized that the Emir’s availability is “highly sought for a purposeful investigation.”
The invitation is part of a broader investigation into reported violence that marred the Sallah celebrations. Despite a state-imposed ban on durbar processions due to security concerns, Emir Sanusi allegedly went ahead with the traditional event, drawing large crowds. The decision is believed to have escalated tensions and contributed to the ensuing chaos.
Authorities have already made an arrest in connection with the violence. A 20-year-old man, Usman Sagiru, is currently in custody over the death of a vigilante member said to be part of the Emir’s entourage after Eid prayers. In addition, the Shamakin Kano, Alhaji Wada Isyaku, has also been invited for interrogation over alleged defiance of the durbar ban.
The police say the investigation is aimed at uncovering the root cause of the disturbance and ensuring accountability for any breaches of public order.
