A 23-year-old student, Emmanuella Ahenjir, was shot dead by unidentified police officers at Wurukum roundabout in Makurdi, Benue State, after the vehicle she was in failed to stop when flagged down on Friday morning.

According to eyewitnesses, police officers on patrol signaled the vehicle to stop, but when the driver did not comply, the officers opened fire, hitting Emmanuella. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but later died from excessive blood loss.
Emmanuella was a 200-level student of Business Management at Federal University Wukari, Taraba State. Her sudden death has sparked widespread anger and grief in Makurdi, with many demanding justice for the young student.
Civil society groups and local residents have threatened to stage mass protests if the police personnel responsible are not identified and held accountable. Ukan Kurugh, a prominent gender rights activist, warned that Makurdi might face a lockdown if the state police command fails to act swiftly.
Attempts to get a comment from the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Catherine Anene, were unsuccessful as of the time of this report.
