A police officer attached to the Kano State Command, Inspector Aminu Ibrahim, has died in an accidental shooting that occurred in the Hotoro area of Kano State.
The tragic incident happened on Saturday while the officer was on duty at a private company where he was deployed, security expert Zagazola Makama disclosed in a post on X on Sunday.

Reports indicated that the inspector accidentally discharged his rifle while attempting to use the toilet. He was said to have been squatting with his loaded AK-47 rifle hanging around his neck when it went off, striking him in the stomach. The weapon, registered as GT 4177, was later discovered in an unsafe position with one empty shell.
Investigators confirmed that 29 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the rifle, with one bullet missing, believed to be the shot that caused the fatal wound.
Although Ibrahim was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, he was pronounced dead by a medical doctor on duty. His body has since been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for an autopsy.
Reacting to the development, the spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, Haruna Abdullahi, said the matter would be formally addressed during a press briefing. He assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, security stakeholders have renewed calls for continuous retraining of police operatives on the safe handling of firearms to reduce such avoidable tragedies.
The incident comes weeks after a similar case in August, where a 10-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his father, also a police inspector, while playing with the officer’s rifle.
