The incident occurred yesterday morning at the Atakpa Divisional Police Station, where Bassey had returned after completing his night duty at a microfinance bank in Calabar South, Vanguard reports.

A security source revealed that upon his return, Bassey began acting erratically, refusing to surrender his AK-47 rifle and issuing threats to his colleagues. He reportedly blocked the station’s gate, preventing movement in and out of the premises while resisting efforts to calm him down.

As the situation worsened, tactical teams were dispatched to the scene. However, Bassey, upon sighting them, opened fire indiscriminately. Tragically, a civilian, identified as 41-year-old Mrs. Ijoema Obot, the wife of a retired police officer, was killed in the attack, while two others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, stated that the situation had been brought under control and that Bassey had been taken into custody. She assured that investigations were underway and that the injured victims were receiving medical attention.
