Police officers have been accused of shooting and killing the son of the Chief Imam of Kuchibuyi community in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and injuring his brother during a clash over a land dispute.

The deceased, identified as Attahiru Abubakar, reportedly died instantly after being hit by a police bullet. His brother, Abass Abubakar, sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

The incident occurred during a confrontation between residents and security personnel, who were said to have been invited by a private estate manager attempting to take over community land.

While the FCT Police Command claimed its officers responded to a civil disturbance, residents of Kuchibuyi strongly contest the official narrative. They allege that the police opened fire on unarmed individuals after tensions appeared to have calmed down.

FCT Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh, in a statement on Saturday, said the police acted on a distress call and were able to restore calm. She confirmed that arrests were made and investigations had begun, but gave no further details.

However, members of the victim’s family and eyewitnesses insist the shooting was unprovoked. They said the police returned to the area and began firing at residents, resulting in Attahiru’s death and injuries to his brother and father, the Chief Imam.
