The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, for his assertion that the party is “dead,” labeling him as “very inconsequential” in today’s Nigerian political landscape.

Kwankwaso, who represented the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 presidential race, made his remarks during the inauguration of his party’s newly renovated office in Katsina on Saturday. He claimed that his departure from the PDP was due to the party’s supposed demise.

In response, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba dismissed Kwankwaso’s comments, emphasizing that the party has no intention of engaging in a debate over what he described as “self-centeredness and insensitivity.”

Ologunagba stated, “He is very inconsequential in Nigerian national politics today, considering that he is struggling to lead a party called NNPP, which is only managing to govern one state.”

He further questioned how Kwankwaso could label a party with 13 governors, numerous Senators, Members of the House of Representatives, several State Assemblies, and a robust presence across all Local Government Areas and Wards as “dead.”

Ologunagba added, “It is alarming that at a time when the PDP and concerned Nigerians are addressing the severe hardships caused by the APC administration—ranging from soaring poverty, widespread hunger, a plummeting Naira, and skyrocketing petrol prices—Senator Kwankwaso is fixated on his own ambition to become President. This focus on personal gain is deeply unfortunate.”

He concluded, “The PDP will not engage in further discussions on his display of egocentricity. Any political relevance Senator Kwankwaso may have once held was primarily due to his association with the PDP.”
