Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has reconvened a plenary session with four lawmakers, challenging his recent removal from office.

Obasa arrived at the assembly complex in the afternoon, escorted by security personnel. The session commenced at 3 p.m. after security operatives forced open the chamber doors, allowing Obasa and his supporters to proceed.
Meanwhile, over 26 other assembly members remained outside, reaffirming their loyalty to the newly sworn-in Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
Obasa has dismissed his removal, arguing that it did not follow due process. He insists that impeachment must adhere to constitutional and democratic procedures, emphasizing that he was never formally removed. While he does not oppose impeachment, he maintains that it must be done lawfully.
His removal took place on January 13 while he was abroad, and Mojisola Meranda was swiftly sworn in as his replacement. The abrupt transition has sparked controversy, with Obasa challenging both his dismissal and Meranda’s legitimacy as Speaker.
The leadership crisis deepened earlier today as security aides assigned to the incumbent Speaker were reportedly withdrawn, adding further uncertainty to the situation within the assembly.
