The National Population Commission (NPC) has said it is yet to fix any date for the census that was scheduled to take place in May 2022.

Chairman of NPC, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, had said the much-awaited census to know the number of Nigerians residing in the country would hold in May.

But speaking on Monday at a management training in preparation for the census, Kwarra said the commission is ready to conduct the exercise whenever a declaration is made by the president.

“I can assure you that census will be conducted this year but for me to give any particular date at this moment, I can’t do that because the national leadership is still discussing the matter and they will let the nation know when the exercise will be done. I can’t take May as the month out but I can tell you that very soon you will hear from Mr president.”

On whether the exercise would hold with the country in top gear for the 2023 election, he said the country should be able to do census while preparation for election is going on.

“We have a long period for campaigning from June to February but we can take a few number of days to conduct the census,” he said.

While pleading that the census should not be imbued with politics but should be devoted to planning and developing of the country, he said digital tools would be deployed during the exercise to make it credible to all sections of the country.

He added that the training was to, among others, determination the readiness of the commission in delivering on its mandate of conducting a credible and reliable census. (DailyTrust)
