The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano has suspended Senator Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South, along with three federal lawmakers over alleged acts of disloyalty.

Announcing the decision on Monday, the party’s state chairman, Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, identified the affected members as Sumaila, Alhaji Abdullahi Sani Rogo of Rogo Federal Constituency, Alhaji Abdullahi Rurum of Rano/Kibiya, and Ali Maadakin Gini, who represents Dala Federal Constituency.
Dungurawa expressed the party’s disappointment, stating that despite receiving automatic tickets during the elections, the lawmakers have acted against the NNPP’s interests. He stressed that their conduct contradicts the party’s principles and would not be tolerated.
He further warned that the NNPP remains committed to enforcing discipline within its ranks and will not hesitate to take action against members undermining the party’s values.
The suspension of Kawu Sumaila might be connected to his recent engagements with key figures in the opposition. The presence of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, and Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, at private events hosted by Sumaila in Kano sparked speculation about his possible return to the APC.
Their attendance at the convocation of Al-Istiqama University, a private institution founded by Sumaila, and other gatherings raised concerns within the NNPP, especially as Governor Abba Yusuf and NNPP leader Rabiu Kwankwaso were noticeably absent.
