Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has declared that the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) is rapidly losing relevance in Kano State, describing it as a “mushroom party fading fast” following the mass defection of key grassroots mobilizers and members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senator Jibrin made the statement on his verified X account on Wednesday while announcing the defections.

He noted that NNPP’s influence is declining, particularly in Kano Central senatorial district, and that both Kano North and South have already seen major political figures abandoning the party.

Among those who defected is Alhaji Abdullahi Sani Kwami, a former vice chairman of Gwarzo Local Government Area, who led hundreds of grassroots party executives and women leaders to the APC.

Another group, led by Comrade Mohammed Nafiu Danlami, renounced the Kwankwasiyya movement, discarding its symbolic red caps. They cited dissatisfaction with the leadership’s approach, which they described as anti-masses and dictatorial.

Welcoming the defectors, Senator Jibrin commended their decision, stating that NNPP is losing political relevance and has become nothing more than a mushroom party. He assured them that the APC offers a more inclusive platform with better opportunities.

He also criticized NNPP’s leadership structure, arguing that it is controlled by a single individual, which he believes contradicts democratic principles.
