The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Sunday led other stakeholders in a sensitisation walk against drug abuse and Illicit drug trafficking in Kano.
The State Commander of the Agency, Mr Abubakar Idris-Ahmad said the the exercise was designed to enhance awareness creation on the dangers of substance abuse.
According to him, the walk is part of activities to mark the 2023 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking coming up on June 26.
The theme of the day is, “People first: stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen prevention”.
Idris-Ahmad said the sensitisation exercise targeted Gama, Gwagwarwa and Brigade areas of Kano metropolis.
“The mini stadium is an environment in Gama quarters that we recorded four murder cases two months ago, and it linked to drug inducement before committing the crimes,” he said.
He urged parents and members of the public not to discriminate victims of drug abuse, adding that, “those that have such victims in their families should feel free to come to us, we will render assistance to them.
“Our doors are always open for information on drug peddlers within the community, information given to us will be given utmost confidentiality”.
Also, Amb. Maryam Hassan, Executive Director, League for Societal Protection Against Drug Abuse (LESPADA), said the walk was to create awareness and prevent people from having access to substances.
According to Hassan, the group is a non governmental organisation with a mission to enlighten the people on the effect of drug abuse.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that representatives of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigerian Red Cross, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) attended the event.
