The Kano State chapter of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP ) has appealed to Gov. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to consider the payment of outstanding pensions, gratuities and death benefits to retirees and their families.

Daily News24 learnt that the pensioners owe state government over N28 billion.

Comrade Salisu Ahamad Gwale, the NUP chairman in the state, made the call while briefing newsmen as part of activities to mark the 2021 Pensioner’s day in Kano.

Recall that United Nations has set aside 11 of December every year to Mark the International Pensioners Day.

Gwale said “the Pensioners day is a day of happiness , joy, laughter and celebration for retirees across the world but Kano State pensioners are not in a mood to celebrate because of the situation we find ourselves.

“We are sad not celebrating,” he added.

He argued that payment of monthly pension and gratuities to pensioners was a right not a privilege.

Gwale said pensioners were using the occasion to appeal to state governor Ganduje who are defaulting in payment of monthly pensions to retirees and gratuities to have a change of heart and do the needful.

Some of Pensioners who spoke to Daily News24 said, they are being forced to depend on family members and friends to survive.
