The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusif Abdullahi Ata, has issued a stern warning to Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria’s Peoples Party (NNPP), urging him to avoid making “contemptuous statements” regarding the ongoing legal battle over the Kano Emirate Council.
Ata’s caution follows remarks made by Kwankwaso, who alleged interference from Lagos in the selection of Kano’s Emir.

Speaking during the convocation at Skylight University, Kwankwaso stated, “Today, we can see very clearly there is a lot of effort from the Lagos axis to polarize this part of the country… Lagos wouldn’t allow us to choose our Emir.”
In response, Ata emphasized the sensitive nature of the legal proceedings, reminding the public that the issue surrounding the Kano Emirate is still in court. He urged Kwankwaso to refrain from further comments that could potentially be seen as contempt of court.
Ata said, “The issue of the Kano Emirate is still pending in court. It is crucial that leaders act responsibly and avoid statements that may deepen divisions within the country or lead to contempt of court.”
Further stressing the importance of unity, Ata added, “My remarks underscore the need for leaders to act responsibly to foster unity, rather than causing disharmony and creating uncertainty among the citizens.”
