Meta has announced that WhatsApp will no longer function on a range of older smartphones starting May 5, 2025.

The move is expected to affect both regular users and small businesses who rely on WhatsApp Business for daily communication.

The affected devices include iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, which are unable to upgrade beyond iOS 12.5.7. Several Android phones running version 4.4 (KitKat) or earlier such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 and first-generation Motorola Moto G will also be impacted.

Meta explained that the decision was necessary to ensure the app remains secure and compatible with current technology standards. “As smartphones and operating systems evolve, older models struggle to keep up with the demands of modern applications,” the company said.

Users who wish to continue using WhatsApp after the deadline are advised to upgrade to devices running iOS 15.1 or Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and above. Meta also urged users to back up their chat history before transitioning to a new device to avoid data loss.
