Some lawyers working with the Kano State Government have threatened to go on strike over what they described as the denial of their entitlements and poor treatment by the Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi.

The lawyers, who requested anonymity, accused the Commissioner of sidelining them and withholding essential work items approved by the state governor. They said the items include courtroom attire such as robes and caps, as well as computers meant to aid their performance.
They alleged that despite the governor’s approval, the materials have not been distributed, leaving them feeling neglected and unsupported in their duties.
One of the lawyers also alleged interference in the justice process. According to the source, there have been cases involving serious crimes like rape, murder and armed robbery where suspects were found culpable after investigation, but instead of being charged in court, instructions were issued for their release.
Speaking on Friday on behalf of the Commissioner for Justice, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Barrister Mustafa Muhammad Nuraddin, denied the allegations and described them as false
Barrister Mustapha said each lawyer was paid N200,000 last year for gowns and wigs, contrary to the previous administration’s payment of 50,000. He added that more payments would be made again this year.
Regarding the computers promised by the governor, he said the government gave each lawyer the funds for purchase, with documented proof and signatures. He noted that anyone who did not buy theirs likely chose not to after receiving the money.
