A fresh crisis has hit the Labour Party (LP) as the party’s leadership issued a 48-hour ultimatum to its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to resign over his involvement in a newly formed opposition coalition.

The ultimatum was made public on Thursday, a day after Obi appeared at the official launch of the coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The new political alliance is being positioned to challenge the current government in the 2027 general elections, with the ADC serving as the coalition’s platform.

Obi’s participation in the event has raised concerns within the LP, especially since he has not formally declared his exit from the party. This is in contrast to other politicians, including former ministers Rotimi Amaechi and Abubakar Malami, who officially resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) before joining the new coalition.

The Labour Party has dissociated itself from the coalition, describing it as a gathering of politicians pursuing personal interests. The party’s leadership maintains that it has no ties with the alliance and has called on Obi to return his membership card without delay.

The LP also alleged that Obi has been holding private meetings with some party members to convince them to join the coalition. According to the party, any member found to be part of the plan would be asked to step down from their position.
