The former Governor of Kano and leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has warned that any individual claiming to be emir of Kano apart from Muhammadu Sanusi II is fake and not recognized by the people or the government.

Daily News 24 reports that Kwankwaso made the remark during the 4th convocation ceremony of Skyline University, emphasizing that attempts to install other emirs, whether from Abuja or elsewhere, have no legitimacy.

He recalled past incidents of competing claims to the emirship in Kano, saying, “This is not the first time Kano has witnessed an emir tussle. When I was a student at the technical school in Kofar Nassarawa, people used to greet and hail the so called second emir as he entered the city through Kofar Nassarawa to the school. He was not the legitimate emir, but people treated him as if he were.”

He also praised Skyline University for appointing Emir Sanusi II as its chancellor, highlighting the emir’s commitment to education. He added, “Education is the number one priority for the Kwankwassiya movement and the NNPP, and Emir Sanusi has shown great dedication.”

The ongoing tussle involves Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero. In 2019, former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje created four additional emirates, reducing Sanusi’s authority. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf later repealed the law and reinstated Sanusi, but court challenges continue, and a final verdict has not yet been delivered.
