Former Kano State Governor and NNPP leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has criticised the Federal Government over what he described as Nigeria’s rapidly worsening security situation, warning that recent developments show the government is struggling to contain nationwide threats.

In a message posted on his Facebook page on Monday, Kwankwaso said he is “deeply concerned” about the direction the country is heading, noting that the scale of attacks, violence, and social tension indicates that insecurity is beginning to overwhelm the authorities.
He argued that although tackling insecurity is a shared responsibility between federal, state, and local governments, the centre appears to be losing grip, especially with the way states are now setting up vigilante groups without adequate professional training.
According to him, the approval given to state governments to establish such outfits has unintentionally fueled the proliferation of small arms and light weapons across the country. He warned that some individuals are now exploiting the situation by forming private militias, including political actors whose activities threaten national peace.
Kwankwaso also condemned the rising cases of ethnic and regional profiling, saying some Nigerians are increasingly being harassed, arrested, or tortured in regions outside their home states. He added that social media has become a fertile ground for hate speech, intimidation, and inflammatory rhetoric driven by ethnic and religious sentiment.
“These trends pose a grave threat to national unity and cohesion,” he wrote, urging the Federal Government to act decisively before the situation spirals further out of control.
Kwankwaso, who once served as Minister of Defence and chaired the Committee on the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, said he finds the current ease of arms circulation “deeply alarming and unacceptable.”
He concluded by congratulating General Christopher Musa on his appointment as Minister of Defence, expressing confidence that with strong political will, he can make meaningful progress in restoring peace and stability across the country.
