The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has announced plans to roll out a large-scale metering exercise across its franchise areas under the Distribution Sector Recovery Program (DISREP), a World Bank-funded initiative valued at $500 million.

The program is designed to enhance the financial and technical efficiency of electricity distribution companies nationwide through the deployment of advanced prepaid meters and Meter Data Management Systems.

Under the initiative, KEDCO will install at least 128,000 prepaid meters at no cost to customers in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States. The company said the move is aimed at closing the metering gap, eliminating estimated billing, and improving customer experience.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of KEDCO, Dr. Abubakar S. Jimeta, explained that the metering exercise represents a major step toward improving service delivery and ensuring financial sustainability. He noted that the project will target unmetered customers while also replacing defective meters in line with the existing Meter Asset Provider framework.

KEDCO has also assured customers that the meters provided under the DISREP project are completely free and warned against making any form of payment to its staff or agents. The company appealed for cooperation from beneficiaries to facilitate a smooth and transparent implementation, with a goal of achieving full metering coverage and a more dependable electricity supply across its service areas.
