Katsina State government has approved a monthly allowance of N30,000 for teachers posted to rural schools across the state.

The incentive was sanctioned by the State Executive Council during its 18th regular meeting on Wednesday, chaired by Governor Dikko Radda in Katsina.

Briefing journalists on Thursday, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Yusuf Suleiman-Jibia, said the stipend, structured to be paid every term, aims to motivate teachers and ease the financial challenges associated with working in remote areas. He added that the council also approved the establishment of Teachers’ Development Training Centres in Katsina, Daura, and Funtua.

The centres will provide continuous professional development for primary and secondary school teachers through workshops facilitated by university lecturers and retired education specialists.

The initiative follows recommendations from a September summit organized by Save the Children International, funded by Education Cannot Wait, which emphasized the importance of encouraging teachers to accept postings in hard-to-reach and insecure areas where staffing is often insufficient.

Senior Director of Schools in the ministry, Hajiya Raliya Yusuf, highlighted that many educators prefer urban postings, leaving rural schools understaffed. She said the stipend and training centres are intended to attract teachers to locations that typically pose fewer security risks.

SCI Programme Manager, Mrs Atine Lewi, said the allowance is expected to significantly improve education outcomes in the state by fostering teacher commitment and retention in remote communities. She described the move as a key part of Katsina’s broader education reform strategy.
