The Kano State Government has unveiled a new amnesty initiative designed to rehabilitate youths involved in political thuggery and other social unrest.

The programme, known as the safe corridor initiative, was announced on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi-Waiya, during an event held at the state police command headquarters.
According to Abdullahi-Waiya, the initiative has so far profiled 718 young people, while an additional 960 cases are undergoing police verification. He explained that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf introduced the programme as part of efforts to discourage violent behaviour that has long tarnished the state’s reputation.
Under the plan, those who embrace peace will undergo drug screening, rehabilitation, and skills acquisition training to support their reintegration into society. Once validated by the police, participants will be granted amnesty by the governor, clearing them of past offences linked to thuggery.
The State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, also used the occasion to appeal to armed youths to surrender their weapons and take advantage of the initiative, describing it as a chance for them to live as law-abiding and productive citizens.
In his remarks, the Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, encouraged participants to assist security agencies by exposing drug peddlers and persuading others still in thuggery to join the rehabilitation programme.
