Kano State has recorded a major boost in its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), doubling its figures within a year under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

According to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and confirmed by Statista, Kano’s IGR rose from N37.38 billion in 2023 to N74.77 billion in 2024, representing a 100 percent increase. This development places Kano among the top-performing states in Nigeria’s 2024 IGR ranking.

Governor Yusuf’s Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam, in a statement issued to newsmen, said the increase was achieved through a swift and strategic overhaul of the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) shortly after the governor assumed office.

Adam explained that the governor appointed a capable team to strengthen revenue management, close leakages, and improve transparency. He noted that Governor Yusuf employed one of the best hands to handle the state’s revenue generation, which led to the impressive result of Kano topping the chart in 2024.

He further stated that the current administration’s approach to revenue generation is not focused on burdening citizens with taxes but on ensuring efficiency and accountability. He said people have been curious about the source of funding for the ongoing infrastructural projects, explaining that the reforms in the revenue service have made this possible.

He added that unlike the previous administration, Governor Yusuf’s government has refrained from taxing tricycle riders (Adaidaita Sahu operators) and other low-income earners who were previously overtaxed.

The statement emphasized that the doubling of IGR was a result of blocking financial leakages and reforming internal systems within the state’s revenue agency. Adam noted that among the strategies employed by the administration to improve the state’s IGR is blocking leakages and loopholes, which ultimately led to the 100 percent increase recorded in 2024.

The NBS data shows Enugu State leading with N180.50 billion (+433%), followed by Kano with N74.77 billion (+100%), and Cross River with N47.02 billion (+49%).

Governor Yusuf, through his aide, expressed gratitude to the people of Kano for their cooperation and assured them of the administration’s commitment to channeling the increased revenue into more infrastructural projects that will enhance development across the state.
