The Rano Emirate in Kano State has announced a ban on withdrawing girls from school for marriage until they complete their primary education.

The directive was issued by the Emir of Rano, Ambassador Dr. Muhammad Isa Umaru, during the 2025/2026 primary school enrollment exercise held in Lausu town on Friday. The event was organized in partnership with the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and UNICEF.

Speaking through the Emirate’s spokesperson, Nasiru Habu Faragai, the Emir ordered district and ward heads, Fulani leaders, and Islamic clerics to enforce the decision strictly, warning that violators will be sanctioned.

He condemned the practice of withdrawing girls from school for marriage, stressing that it undermines their future and slows down the development of the girl-child. The monarch further cautioned parents and teachers against colluding in such acts.

Dr. Umaru called on parents and community leaders to work with the government in promoting education, noting that investing in the education of children, especially girls, is key to progress in the state.
