The Kano State Police Command has dismissed reports alleging that journalist Abdulaziz Aliyu was detained for several hours at the Court Road Area Command in Gyadi-Gyadi, Kano.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Command explained that Aliyu was not detained but invited following a petition filed against him. According to the police, the invitation formed part of routine investigative procedures. After his initial appearance, he was granted bail and directed to return on September 10, 2025, to continue assisting with the investigation.
The police further disclosed that checks with the Kano chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) confirmed that neither Aliyu nor the author of the online allegation, Yakubu Salisu, are registered members of the union.
The Command stressed its commitment to safeguarding individual rights while maintaining cordial relations with journalists and the wider media community. It reaffirmed respect for press freedom and constitutional rights to free expression.
However, the police described the allegation by Salisu as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and damage the image of the Command, warning that necessary steps would be taken within the law.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, assured residents that the investigation into the petition against Aliyu will be handled transparently and professionally. He also urged the public to verify information before sharing it and to continue cooperating with security agencies in the state.
