The Kano State government has commenced the distribution of N1 billion worth of free fertilizers to smallholder farmers across the state.

The initiative, which started on Thursday at the Government House in Kano, is part of Governor Abba Yusuf’s campaign promise to enhance livelihoods through strategic investment in agribusiness.

Governor Yusuf, during the distribution event, reiterated his commitment to agricultural transformation, which he had pledged during his campaign for the 2023 elections. His vision was detailed in a 70-page blueprint titled “My Commitment for Kano,” which outlined plans to provide quality and affordable agricultural inputs to boost the sector.

Speaking at the event, the governor explained that over N1 billion worth of NPK fertilizers would be distributed to 52,800 smallholder farmers across all 44 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state. The fertilizers were produced by the state-owned Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO), with the goal of reducing production costs and enhancing food security.

“In fulfillment of our campaign promise, we are today distributing over N1 billion worth of NPK fertilizers to 52,800 smallholder farmers. This initiative is aimed at reducing the cost of production and boosting food security in Kano State,” Governor Yusuf stated.

Furthermore, the State Executive Council has approved the procurement of over N5 billion worth of fertilizers, which will be made available to farmers at subsidized rates. This intervention is designed to assist farmers who are struggling with the high costs of inputs and labor, enabling them to increase their productivity.

“The State Executive Council has approved the procurement of over N5 billion worth of fertilizers to be provided to farmers at a subsidized rate. This will help our farmers who are battling high input and labor costs to boost their productivity,” the governor added.

Governor Yusuf also emphasized the government’s commitment to sustaining food production through the regular supply of fertilizers by KASCO. He noted that KASCO and other state manufacturing centers are being strengthened to enhance revenue flow and stimulate the state’s economy.

“KASCO and other state manufacturing centers are being revitalized to boost our revenue flow and strengthen our economy. Our government is dedicated to ensuring a steady supply of fertilizers to support our farmers and sustain food production,” he said.

The distribution includes special provisions for women farmers and people living with disabilities, who are expected to receive 25 kg of NPK fertilizer each. This inclusive approach aims to ensure that all segments of the farming community benefit from the government’s agricultural initiatives.
