Kano State has launched a large-scale multi-vaccine campaign aimed at protecting children from preventable diseases, including measles, rubella, and polio.

The exercise, which begins on October 6, will target over seven million children across the state.

Dr. Ahmad Tijjanu Habibu, Director of Disease Control at the Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board, disclosed this during a media briefing on Monday. He said the campaign forms part of a nationwide effort to vaccinate 106 million children, making it the largest of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa.

The campaign will cover different age groups depending on the vaccine type. Routine immunization will focus on children aged 0 to 23 months, measles-rubella on those between 9 months and 14 years, polio on children under five, and onchocerciasis treatment on children above five in six local government areas.

By integrating multiple vaccines including hepatitis and HPV, alongside polio and onchocerciasis treatment, the government aims to improve efficiency and reduce the need for repeated vaccination drives.

The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), WHO, Gavi, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, civil society organizations, and the Kano State Government. The campaign will use fixed and temporary vaccination posts, as well as sweep teams, with 3,347 teams deployed across the state.

Kano has made significant progress in combating polio, reducing reported cases from 31 in 2024 to just three in 2025. UNICEF has called for stronger government involvement to ensure full eradication. Authorities also emphasized the critical role of the media in raising awareness, dispelling myths, and promoting vaccine uptake, especially in hard-to-reach communities.

The state government expects the campaign to strengthen public health, prevent outbreaks, and safeguard millions of children from preventable diseases.
