The Kano State government has renewed its call for President Bola Tinubu to remove the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, from the state, citing his continued presence as a source of tension.

Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, speaking on behalf of the government, criticized the security agencies for suppressing protests against Bayero’s stay at the Nassarawa mini palace. He accused the police and military of being used to oppress the state government and undermine democracy in Kano.

Gwarzo expressed concern over the use of force to disperse demonstrators, alleging that teargas and live ammunition were deployed against youths protesting peacefully. He insisted that Kano has already appointed its emir and urged President Tinubu to intervene by removing Bayero, whom he claimed was enthroned by the president.

The situation escalated on Wednesday as heavily armed security operatives patrolled Kano, displaying a show of force in response to the unrest.

Th Kano State Police Command confirmed the arrest of 17 individuals who participated in the protest. The police have also warned against violent demonstrations, vowing to deal decisively with any group attempting to incite unrest in the state.

Despite the tension, Gwarzo maintained that the government supports citizens’ rights to peaceful protest, stressing the need to uphold democracy.
