The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, led the payment exercise on Friday in Kano, alongside the Director of the Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB).
According to him, 412 of the beneficiaries are sanitation workers, while others fall under different categories of the ministry’s ad-hoc staff.
Dr. Hashim noted that the move marked the final phase of settling accumulated arrears inherited by the present administration.
“When we came in, we discovered a backlog of unpaid allowances for ad-hoc workers. In our first month, we cleared the entitlements of 2,869 street sweepers, followed by payments to 229 forest guards. Today, with the support of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, we are addressing the arrears of another 512 ad-hoc staff,” the commissioner explained.
He added that the ministry’s next focus will be on retraining, professional development, and gradually absorbing qualified ad-hoc staff into permanent positions.
“We are committed to bridging skill gaps, engaging new experts where needed, and building a more professional workforce to deliver on our mandate,” Dr. Hashim said.
