The committee was inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim, on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. It is tasked with uncovering the root cause of the incident, evaluating the level of destruction, and proposing measures to avert similar disasters.
Alhaji Ibrahim stressed the importance of transparency and coordination in delivering relief to victims. He called on donors and well-wishers to route their contributions through the committee or the government’s official relief account, assuring that this would guarantee accountability and fairness in the distribution of support.
Chaired by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaji Nasiru Garo, the committee includes representatives from government agencies, security services, and key market stakeholders.
Its responsibilities also include assessing the market’s fire safety status, reviewing emergency response efforts, identifying affected persons, and checking compliance with urban safety rules. The committee is expected to submit a detailed report within a week, with recommendations to guide the government’s intervention and help prevent future occurrences.
