The move, officials say, aims to address rising concerns over security lapses and unregulated transactions within the sector, which have affected both public safety and revenue generation.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting, the Chairman of the Committee and Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the real estate sector has witnessed rapid growth without proper oversight, creating room for unqualified individuals to engage in property dealings.
He said, “This committee was approved by His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, to establish a regulatory framework for real estate operations, including the sale, leasing, and renting of properties in the state.”
The committee will be responsible for developing a comprehensive database of real estate practitioners in Kano and setting up operational guidelines to ensure the sector aligns with standard procedures and international best practices.
According to Waiya, the committee will also review existing real estate laws in other states as part of its effort to formulate practical and enforceable strategies tailored to Kano’s unique challenges.
The committee includes representatives from the Ministry of Land and Physical Planning, the Kano Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA), the Kano State Internal Revenue Service, and the Ministry of Justice. It also features leaders of property and land development associations such as the Kano Property Agents and Development Association, the Plot and Foundation Housing Agents Association, and the Kano Real Estate and Land Agents Development Association.
