The call was made on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, during a special meeting with members of the Association of Online Journalists at the Kano State Ministry of Information.
Waiya said the collaboration has become crucial to ensure residents receive factual and verified reports, especially at a time when some parts of the state are grappling with security concerns. He expressed displeasure over a recent publication that portrayed Kano as a safe haven for terrorists, describing the report as “false and misleading.”
He stressed that journalists have a responsibility to support efforts toward addressing insecurity rather than amplifying content capable of escalating tension, warning that misleading reports carry serious consequences for the state.
The Commissioner noted that online media plays a vital role in contemporary communication, pointing out that digital platforms can reach millions instantly and at any hour.
Responding, the Chairman of the Association of Online Journalists, Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, assured the government of the association’s commitment to responsible reporting. He said members will continue to refrain from publishing content that could encourage or fuel insecurity in Kano State.
