The findings were made public on Tuesday following the formal presentation of the committee’s report to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, at Government House, Kano.
The panel, set up to probe the commissioner’s involvement, reviewed documents and heard testimonies before submitting its conclusions. According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the committee established that the commissioner voluntarily applied to stand as surety for the defendant on July 18, 2025.
He also deposed to an affidavit confirming his position as a serving commissioner and agreed to abide by all bail conditions until the end of the trial. The report noted that while the commissioner met the court’s eligibility criteria for a surety, he failed to exercise proper caution in making the decision especially considering the serious nature of the charges.
The committee also found that the commissioner was aware of the drug-related allegations against Danwawu and the state government’s firm stance against drug trafficking and related offenses. Although there was no evidence of a personal relationship between the commissioner and the defendant, or of any financial or material inducement, the panel concluded that the decision lacked sound judgment and went against the spirit of the government’s policies.
It further clarified that the commissioner did not deposit any money for the bail, including the N5 million referenced in the defendant’s affidavit.
Governor Yusuf, in his remarks, commended the committee for its professional and objective work, assuring the public that the report would be thoroughly reviewed and appropriate action taken in line with due process and the public interest.
