Daily News 24 reports that in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya on Friday, the government expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims, describing the incident as a “heinous act” that must not go unpunished.
According to preliminary reports, the victims, mainly hunters traveling from Rivers State to Kano for Eid celebrations, were allegedly ambushed by a local vigilante group and armed youths. Their vehicle was reportedly stopped, and they were brutally attacked, tied with used tires, and set on fire after being doused with petrol.
The Kano government decried the incident as a violation of human rights and a troubling example of extrajudicial violence in the country. It stressed that such acts undermine public confidence in the justice system and the state’s ability to protect its citizens.
Calling for a swift and transparent investigation, the government urged authorities to ensure that all those involved, including any law enforcement officers who may have failed in their duty, are held accountable.
“We call on President Bola Tinubu and Governor Monday Okpebholo to strongly denounce this act and take decisive steps to ensure justice is served. This tragedy highlights a growing pattern of mob violence in Nigeria, which must be addressed to restore law and order,” the statement read.
The Kano government also reaffirmed its commitment to improving security measures and ensuring that victims and their families receive justice. It called for better-equipped law enforcement agencies to respond to such threats and prevent future occurrences.
“We stand with all Nigerians in condemning this act and demand urgent measures to prevent such violence from recurring. Protecting human life and preserving our community values remain our top priority,” the statement concluded.
