The Kano State Government has reiterated its commitment to reviving and preserving the city’s rich cultural and historical heritage, which has been gradually eroded by urban development and years of neglect.

Speaking at a dinner organised for the World Heritage Volunteers Initiative, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf described the programme as a laudable step capable of “catapulting our history and heritage into the next stage.”

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim, the governor stressed that the initiative is a noble cause deserving of full government and community support.

Yusuf lamented the loss of several historical landmarks and priceless artifacts, including the demolition of old Kano city halls, which he described as a painful reminder of the city’s fading heritage. He pledged that his administration would intensify efforts to recover and restore remaining heritage sites to ensure future generations value Kano’s historical legacy.

The Director-General of the African International Documentary Festival Foundation, Malame Mangdza, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to protecting and promoting cultural sites across Africa. She noted that the upcoming 2025 Heritage Campaign will focus on documenting and celebrating Kano’s unique heritage to enhance its global visibility as a cultural and tourism hub.

According to the organisers, the initiative aims to engage local communities, traditional leaders, and experts in preserving Kano’s cultural and historical narratives. It also seeks to promote cultural awareness, foster sustainable tourism, and inspire similar preservation efforts across the African continent.
