The announcement was made on Saturday by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who spoke on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf during a condolence visit to Nasarawa Hospital, where the bodies of the deceased were deposited.

The deputy governor described the incident as a devastating loss for both Kano State and the entire country, noting that the athletes had proudly represented the state at a national event aimed at fostering unity and peaceful coexistence. Some of the athletes were returning with gold medals before the accident occurred just a few kilometers from their destination.

In addition to the financial support, the state government also plans to distribute food items and other relief materials to help the bereaved families cope with the tragedy.

Gwarzo confirmed that 20 of the victims had been identified at the hospital, while two others had been taken home by their families. He said the state government would take full responsibility for supporting the families and ensuring the injured survivors receive the best medical care available.

He assured the public that the government remains committed to managing the aftermath of the tragedy with compassion and a sense of duty.

As part of the condolence efforts, the deputy governor also visited Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital to sympathize with seven injured athletes currently undergoing treatment.
