In a statement signed by Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, the government praised the appellate court’s decision delivered by Justice Oyewumi. The court declared on Friday that the Kano Federal High Court did not have the authority to handle cases concerning local government elections.
The case was originally brought by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who challenged the elections’ fairness and raised allegations against the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission Chairman, Professor Sani Lawan Malumfashi.
The Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the Kano State Government, nullifying the earlier judgment and confirming the legitimacy of elections held across all 44 local government areas and 484 wards in Kano State.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf described the ruling as a victory for democracy, the rule of law, and the will of Kano’s people. He thanked the judiciary for its fairness and courage in upholding constitutional values and praised residents for their patience and political maturity during the legal proceedings.
Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya congratulated Governor Yusuf and the people of Kano State, highlighting that the judgment strengthens democratic institutions and respects the mandate given by voters.
