Over 3,000 residents of the Kura/Garunmalam/Madobi Federal Constituency in Kano State are set to benefit from a free eye surgery initiative organized by the Umar Datti Foundation.

The initiative was established by Hon. Yusuf Datti, the member of the House of Representatives representing the constituency, with the goal of restoring sight to the beneficiaries.

During a press briefing, Hon. Datti highlighted the importance of the free eye care program, noting its potential to bring much-needed relief to those suffering from eye challenges. He compared blindness to “living in darkness,” emphasizing its devastating impact as “death in life,” and stressed the urgent need for accessible eye care services in the community.

Datti also assured that despite the economic challenges facing the nation, he remains committed to delivering more developmental projects to his constituency.

Speaking at the commencement of the initiative at Kura General Hospital, the Kano State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, praised the foundation for its efforts. He called on other elected officials and wealthy individuals to emulate Datti’s initiative in various health sectors.

Dr. Yusuf also revealed that the state government has allocated N120 million to upgrade Kura General Hospital, further demonstrating its commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure.

Dr. Kamal Umar, the Chief Medical Officer of Eye Care Saver, provided insight into the program, explaining that it involves thorough screening and diagnosis to assess the severity of patients’ eye conditions. “Some patients will require surgical operations, while others will need medical glasses, drugs, or eye drops,” he said.

Among the beneficiaries was 62-year-old Abubakar Kadawa, who expressed his gratitude to Hon. Datti for restoring his sight after suffering from blurred vision for ten years.
