The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed the death of four young men who drowned while attempting to swim in a blocked waterway in Zangon Kaya, located in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area.

According to a statement by the spokesperson of the fire service, Saminu Abdullahi, the tragic incident occurred on Friday afternoon. The agency received an emergency call at about 1:48 p.m. from a resident, Rabiu Yusif, who reported that four people had fallen into the drainage.

Abdullahi explained that the incident began when two individuals entered the blocked waterway to swim but became trapped. A third person who tried to rescue them also got stuck, followed by a fourth individual who met the same fate while attempting to help.

A rescue team was immediately deployed to the scene. With the help of local residents, two of the victims were brought out, while the remaining two were recovered by fire service personnel.

All four individuals were confirmed dead. They have been identified as Bashir Sani, 28; Nasirudden Tasi’u, 25; Usman Ubale, 26; and Yakubu Muhammed, 22.

The fire service attributed the cause of death to drowning in what it described as “local swimming in a blocked sewer,” and urged residents to avoid swimming in unsafe or poorly drained areas.
