The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has announced it will not lower the nomination fees for the upcoming local government elections.

The commission has set the nomination fee at N10 million for chairmanship positions and N5 million for councillorship positions.

This decision has sparked controversy, especially among opposition members, who have criticized the fees as “prohibitive.”

Despite these objections, KANSIEC Chairman Prof. Sani Lawan Malumfashi has affirmed that the fees will remain unchanged.

Malumfashi explained that the fees were determined based on current inflation rates and the high cost of goods and services in Nigeria. He argued that if other northern states set similar fees, there is no reason for KANSIEC to adjust theirs.

In contrast, the ruling party in Kano State, the NNPP, has supported the fees, calling them “appropriate and realistic.” NNPP Chairman Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa stated that candidates should be financially robust and capable of managing resources effectively.

The elections are scheduled for November 30.
