Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara has been transferred from Kano Correctional Centre to a federal custodial centre in Abuja, the Kano Correctional Service has confirmed.

In a statement on Wednesday and signed by CSC Musbahu Lawan K/Nassarawa, Public Relations Officer of the Kano Command, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) said such transfers are routine administrative procedures carried out under its statutory responsibilities and operational guidelines. The statement noted that moving an inmate to a facility of a different security category falls within the Service’s constitutional mandate, as provided by the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.

Sheikh Abduljabbar was sentenced to death by hanging on 15th December 2022 by a Kano Senior Magistrate court, presided over by Justice Ibrahim Sarki Yola, after being found guilty of blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad. The court ruled that he had made statements deemed offensive, resulting in conviction on all charges filed by the state government.

The NCoS emphasized that the transfer does not affect Kabara’s legal rights, including access to legal representation or the right to appeal. CSC Musbahu Lawan K/Nassarawa, Public Relations Officer of the Kano Command, reassured the public that the welfare and statutory entitlements of the inmate remain fully protected.

He added that the Service remains committed to the safe custody, reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of offenders, in line with its mandate to safeguard public security.
